Proper Bicycle Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your bicycle is essential for safe riding. It is best to refer to the owner's manual for regular maintenance schedules and recommendations, however, below you will find a list of common maintenance procedures that should be regularly completed on your bicycle.
Wheel Inspection
It is important to make sure that your bicycle's wheels are straight and clean of dirt and grease, for best control. Check for alignment by lifting each wheel off the ground and spin them to see if they are crooked or out of round. When cleaning the rims, use a clean rag with soapy water, rinse and air dry. Do not ride while they are wet.
Tire Inspection
Ensure tires are inflated to the pressure indicated on the tire sidewalls. It is better to use a tire gauge and a hand pump than a service station pump. It is also important to check that the tread shows no signs of excessive wear or flat spots, and that there are no cuts or other damage. Excessively worn or damaged tires should be replaced.
Parts Inspection
Be sure to tighten and/or adjust all loose parts. Replace all missing, damaged, or worn parts; for example, brake pads, chainguards, chain links, spokes, screws and bolts, handlebar grips. Periodically oil and clean moving parts.
Frame Inspection
Periodically inspect frame, fork, spindles and other components for cracking.
Storage
Keep bicycle indoors when not in use. Moisture may cause rust and weaken metal parts.
Refer to the owner's manual for further tips on bicycle maintenance.
